My business trip on Monday really took it out of me and I reluctantly made the decision last night to postpone the blog by one day and write about my favorite restaurant today instead of Friday.
So, if you were looking to lose a couple of pounds, you’ll have to wait until tomorrow. Today, I want to introduce you to Break of Dawn in Laguna Hills, Calif.
Part of the transition I’ve undergone on this blog is the move from mostly processed and fried foods to eating freshly prepared fruits, meats and vegetables. In my opinion, no one does that better than Break of Dawn, a tiny restaurant tucked in the back of a shopping center in the middle of some random South Orange County city.
Chef Dee Nguyen cooks up Vietnamese-inspired global cuisine for breakfast and lunch. Choices include corned beef and hash, oxtail soup and meatloaf. I come over and over again because no matter what I order, I can expect it to be fresh and inventive.
With the breakfast scene dominated by pancakes and bacon, a trip to Break of Dawn is always something special.

Since we’re doing healthy burgers this week, I thought it would finally make sense to dust off these Bruxie pictures I’ve been holding on to for a while and show you a burger you should eat when you want to blow your diet.
I don’t want to blather on, so here’s a summary: The guy who woke up one day and decided a burger should get it on with a waffle should be commemorated with a statue.
Get to Bruxie and inhale this burger as soon as possible.

When I have an idea, I tend to tell a lot of people about it, gather opinion and then refine it until I take the idea to Wifey Nadia, eventually getting the go-ahead to pursue another of my crazy capers.
In October I went to Las Vegas to celebrate my 28th birthday with my wife and friends Matt, Neil and Gina. Nadia had yet to arrive, but our tight schedule dictated that my birthday dinner be eaten that night, the day before my birthday, because I had tickets to a concert on the day of.
I chose the finest Thai restaurant I’ve been to, the off-strip Lotus of Siam. The restaurant has been praised in Gourmet magazine and received a James Beard award, but those laurels aside, this is simply one of the finest Thai restaurants around.
While waiting for our meal, I began rattling off my ever-morphing idea for a weight loss blog to Chef Brian and his girlfriend Daga. The original plan was to cook recipes from various sources around the Web, but almost immediately Brian chimed in, wanting to get in on the action.
Over a smattering of dishes, we formulated what would eventually become Fat Dude on a Diet.
If you’re in Vegas, plan a stop at Lotus. You won’t forget it.
