Week 33, Juice 3: The Sweet-Tart

Here goes, Juice 3. Nadia thought it was too sour still, but if  you love grapefruit like I do, this is the one for you.

There’s a pound of strawberries and a spot of honey in the mix to provide some sugar, but it’s needed to counteract so much beautiful tartness. A bunch of kale turns everything a mucky brown, but it adds more to the nutritional scorecard than flavor on this outing.

Keep reading for the recipe.The Recipe (Yield: 4 servings)

2 large grapefruits, peeled
1 lb. strawberries, stems removed
1-inch piece of ginger
1 bunch of kale, rinsed and large stems removed
2 T honey
Fresh mint, to taste

Run all fruits and veggies through the juicer. Whisk in the honey. Pour over ice into a glass with muddled mint leaves, or garnish with sliced mint.

  1. Fat Dude – Don’t hate my soul, but you’re losing nutrients and fiber if you’re using a juicer, because it doesn’t retain the skin and pulp and whatnot. I rolled my eyes when Heather bought the Vitamix, but it’s been worth every penny – stone-cold annihilates everything in its path within seconds. There’s another brand called Blendtec that’s equally good, and you can get solid deals on refurbished models.

    P.S. If your juicer in fact retains the pulp/skin, I hereby retract everything I just said.

    1. Good looking out homeboy. Definitely a concern when trying to do something for nutritional purposes. I am saving up for the vitamix, but my current juicer does separate the pulp. I’ve heard you can bake with it, turn it into compost, etc, but yeah, getting it mixed into the juice would definitely be better.

  2. I’m def gonna try this one, but with raw Manuka honey! Did u run the strawberry pulp through twice? They tend to not give off much juice when they’re really ripe, I’ve noticed…
