Changes (In myself, and on the blog)

I think back to every time I sat on the couch, wishing I wasn’t overweight but never doing anything about it.

“I’ll start tomorrow,” I’d say, or “This weekend I have plans, I”ll start on Monday.” Well, tomorrow always stayed “tomorrow” and the Monday on that calendar got pushed back for years.

I just wrapped up my first month of this year-long weight loss journey, and I have to say, it’s gone by really quick. Whereas 30 or so days ago just finishing a month seemed impossible, I’m already looking forward to how I’ll look and feel in 3 months, 6 months and 1 year.

It’s starting. I think my wrists are shrinking. And my face is slimmer now than in the pictures taken on vacation in mid-October. Clothes fit better, but I’ve yet to go from my size 44 jeans to the 42’s in my closet that have been wanting attention for about a year (I was over-optimistic the last time I tried to drop some pounds).

I set certain goals for myself in the first month: 1) Cook three consecutive nights a week; 2) Eat at least five times a day 3) Drink water like it’s running out and 4) Make sure to walk for at least 30 minutes a day, six times a week.

The cooking has been no problem, though I had a couple of nights where I was over it before I set foot in the kitchen. That goes away once I start usually.

Eating throughout the day instead of stockpiling my calories for three meals has been an easy one, and now my body seems to know when it’s time to eat. I also prefer water over most anything else now — a far cry from the days when I washed most everything down with soda or iced tea.

The walking — well, most nights I’m doing it, but I could be better … but it could also rain less. That would help.

For month two, I’m only going to set two goals for myself: 1) Fit into those size 42’s by Dec. 31 and 2) Walk every night that I can.

I’ll need those jeans to match the Transformer’s T-shirt I plan to fit into about the same time.

As for the scale: Today I weigh 247.3 lbs. I weighed 249.1 lbs. last Monday, my fourth week of blogging. I started this blog weighing 258 lbs. That’s a total loss of 10.7 lbs.

As for the blog: Thank you to everyone who has promoted this blog, supported the project, encouraged me and commented either here or on Facebook. Knowing that people are rooting for me has been the biggest blessing to come from this.

In the first month, Fat Dude on a Diet has been just about the scale, the shopping list and the food.

On Friday, I’ll debut our fifth weekly post, which will always be about food. Some of the things I have planned for this month are posts on the best Thai meal I’ve ever had (coming Friday), what equipment I use in my kitchen and what I eat when I’m not cooking Chef Brian’s recipes.

Fun stuff, y’all. Stay tuned.

    1. Thanks Jim.

I was surprisingly reasonable for the most part. And tried to be limiting when appropriate. I just shared a lot, and took small bites. Enough to get my fill, but was cool to leave the plate with leftovers.
